Mr. Barbecue

Mr. Barbecue
Several weeks ago, I received a “Mr. Barbecue” as a gift in anticipation for the Memorial Day weekend. Everyone in my family knows that I enjoy cooking on the grill and that I would appreciate the gift. When I looked at the box that the set came in, the package read “Mr. Barbecue” set. I actually chuckled because why is cooking in the kitchen considered “woman’s work” however, cooking on the grill is masculine and acceptable for men to do. I guess it is okay for a men to cook outside, but not cook inside, but why? Or better yet, why is the set called the “Mr. Barbecue” instead of the “Ms. Barbecue” set? It’s definitely something that makes you say, “Hmmmm?”

  1. Funny...are there gendered moments that we all fall prey too on an unconscious level? Is barbecuing too dangerous for women? Yet, I saw a New Jersey State Trooper drive by me in my town today and was surprised that she was a woman trooper...not surprised that she was a she but, that a woman as a trooper is still so rare...now, I wonder does she barbecue too?

  2. It’s kind of ironic that I just read your blog. Literally like two hours ago, I was watching a show on the Food Network where there was a challenge almost two teams consisting each of 3 men verses 3 women. Each group member got their introduction and then a little 20 second excerpt where they could trash talk their opponents. 2 out of the 3 men mentioned how they had an upper hand because they were men, and grilling is a mans specialty. I am a little annoyed that I didn’t get to see the results because my dad came in and changed it. I didn’t care at the time, but now after reading your blog, I wish I had seen the results. It would be cool to see the guys get it thrown in their face that women too can be “Ms. /Mrs. Barbequers” :)
